The new, improved Popsearch is back! This facility will allow you to search the Poptastic! database of UK chart hits for all the hits by your favourite artist, together with Top 40 entry date and peak positions! Or do you remember the title, or part of the title of a song, but don't know who did it? You can find out here!
Which years are covered?
Almost every hit since 1980 is there. In addition to a full archive for
1980-2000, I have now updated Popsearch to cover
almost all top 20 hits for 2001. The minor hits from that year will follow
later; details of the
hits thus far added can be found here .
Thanks to Christian Pierre for providing the 1994/96/99 info, periods
where I was missing several charts and therefore unable to complete the
Popsearch! database, and also a few odd missing minor hits from 1992/93/97.
How to use...
Simply put the title, or a word of the title, in the "Title" box and the artist, or a word of the artist in the "artist" box and press Enter or click Go! If you simply want to list all the hits by a particular artist, leave the "Title" box blank. Similarly, if you want to list all the hits containing the word "acid", for example, put it in the title box and leave the artist box blank.
Note that you can narrow the search by clicking the box
adjacent to the title and artist boxes. For example, rather than having
all the hits of Shabba Ranks displayed when you enter "Abba", you can
just list Abba's hits. To reset it, click the box again.
In a new feature, you can also restrict searches to one particular
year.
Hints: If you don't have any luck, try just one word from the title or artist. Problems might occur if you type in the whole title as I may have, on a few instances, cut off some of the title - e.g the bits in brackets. Another possibility is the presence of "The" in the artist name e.g The Smiths. Another source of confusion is spaces - e.g. if "Guns n'(space)Roses" doesn't give you anything, try leaving the space after the apostrophe out. Also try "informalised" names if the full name doesn't work, such as ELO, OMD and Sam Fox (what a combination :) ) rather than Electric Light Orchestra, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and Samantha Fox.
Also note that the character '&' is never used. You should always use the word 'and'.
Other than that, let me know if you
find any glaring errors in the database. I've tried
my best to keep it error free, but with such a lot of data the odd error is,
unfortunately, bound to creep in. Also, expect the odd acerbic comment
on a record I didn't like :)
Technical NOTE: This is a new interactive-form version of Popsearch. The original version was an applet but the old Netscape (version 3) is still more widespread than I thought, so several people were having problems with it. Also applets are rather slow compared to interactive forms. So this should be much quicker and more reliable!
